The ruling CNDD-FDD party has officially designated Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye as its candidate for the 2027 presidential election following an extraordinary congress held on April 26 in Gitega.
The 57-year-old leader, who also serves as the president of the party’s Council of Sages, received the endorsement without surprise, signaling a clear path for political continuity in a nation dominated by the party for over twenty years. The ceremony was a high-profile event, drawing attendance from various political representatives, the diplomatic corps, and delegations from several African countries to witness Ndayishimiye being sworn in as the official candidate.
In his acceptance speech, President Ndayishimiye expressed a deep sense of duty and humility, pledging to serve the nation with loyalty and consistency. He emphasized a commitment to advancing his administration’s ongoing reforms, specifically targeting poverty reduction, the enhancement of national security, and the improvement of governance. Furthermore, the President highlighted the strategic development of productive sectors such as agriculture and mining as essential pillars for the country’s future growth.
This nomination occurs within a complex political landscape where the opposition remains significantly weakened following the 2015 crisis. While the ruling party maintains a firm grip on the electoral process and democratic space, the country continues to grapple with severe economic challenges despite its wealth of natural resources. Nevertheless, the administration continues to promote an ambitious long-term vision, aiming for Burundi to achieve emerging economy status by 2040 and full development by 2060. Although the candidate has been finalized, the specific date for the 2027 polls has yet to be announced by the authorities.
