Ethiopia’s National Election Board on Sunday declared the ruling Prosperity Party the winner of the country’s seventh general election, confirming it had secured 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives.
Announcing the result of the election, NEBE chairperson Melat said Prosperity Party took 90 percent of the parliamentary seats, allowing the ruling party to form the government for the next five years.
NEBE said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s party also swept regional council races, winning more than 80 percent of seats in areas where voting took place, underscoring its continued dominance across much of the country.
It said turnout reached 96.2 percent of the more than 54 million registered voters, a level of participation the Board and state officials highlighted even as recounts, re‑elections and unresolved constituencies remain.
Prosperity Party’s win came after a contest involving 42 political parties and more than 10,000 candidates vying for seats in the national and regional legislatures, alongside independent contenders.
