Sierra Leone’s former President Ernest Bai Koroma has finally returned to his country, ending years of self-imposed exile in Nigeria.
He was seen off by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday as Sierra Leone’s president from 2008 to 2018 left Nigeria for Freetown.
Koroma had spent more than two years in exile in Nigeria where he was allowed to travel to on medical grounds after being accused and detained over an alleged coup plot against his successor Julius Maada Bio.
He was charged with treason following a cocktail of events beginning with widespread unrest over rising cost of living in 2023.
Koroma had denied any wrongdoing and was eventually pardoned, making a brief return to the country earlier this year.
