The Samendéni Fisheries Perimeter of Economic Interest (PHIE), located in western Burkina Faso, has crossed the threshold of 12,000 tonnes of fish production in floating cages over the 2024-2025 period, according to results presented at the 7th general assembly of its management committee.
The meeting was held on April 16 in Bobo-Dioulasso, chaired by the governor of the Guiriko region, Mariana Konaté/Gnanou, who also heads the committee. The session aimed to consolidate a concerted and sustainable management approach for the fisheries resources of this strategic site for the development of fishing and aquaculture.
At the meeting, participants validated the 2025 activity and financial reports, as well as the provisional program for 2026, in the presence of a representative of the ministry responsible for agriculture and animal and fisheries resources.
The data presented indicated that in 2025, capture fishing generated a production of 658.216 tonnes. Floating-cage aquaculture, for its part, reached 12,206 tonnes over two years under the 2023-2025 Agropastoral and Fisheries Offensive. Implementation rates stand at 72.70% on the physical side and 74.17% on the financial side.
The past year was also marked by the issuance of 210 type-A fishing permits, six authorizations for sport fishing, 115 M2 licenses and 24 T licenses, alongside the implementation of a wide-ranging fish monitoring operation.
At the close of the proceedings, several recommendations were put forward, including the establishment of a two-month biological rest period — from August 1 to September 30 — over a three-year span, in order to support the renewal of fishery resources.
Participants also stressed the need to strengthen monitoring mechanisms, facilitate fish distribution during this period and establish a digital platform to improve coordination among the various stakeholders.
Set up as a co-management framework, the Samendéni PHIE is one of the ten fisheries perimeters operating in Burkina Faso.
