The partnership between Gabon and the United Nations system mobilised $18.5 million, or approximately 10.5 billion CFA francs, in 2025 to finance several programmes supporting sustainable development.
This funding represents an increase of approximately 4%, compared to 2024, reflecting the strengthening of cooperation between Libreville and UN agencies around national development priorities.
The mobilized resources were primarily directed towards the social and environmental sectors, including health, education, and combating the effects of climate change.
A portion of the funding also supported initiatives in the areas of governance, youth, and local development.
Gabon-UN cooperation is also increasingly focused on the ecological transition and sustainable finance.
More than 500 young people are involved in initiatives dedicated to the sustainable management of forests and the preservation of natural resources.
In 2023, some 3.5 billion CFA francs had already been mobilised to support the green and blue economy, illustrating the importance Gabon places on the sustainable development of its natural resources.
Under the coordination of the United Nations Resident Representative in Gabon, Fatou Aminata Lo, several innovative financing mechanisms are also being promoted, including debt-for-nature swaps and blue finance.
These mechanisms are intended to attract more investment to sustainable development projects, while supporting the preservation of the country’s financial stability.
Through these various initiatives, Gabon and the United Nations system aim to strengthen investments in the social and environmental sectors and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable economy.
