As Gambian President Adama Barrow concluded an official visit to Guinea, Banjul and Conakry are focusing on improving bilateral relations and collaborating in various spheres of human endeavour.
The Gambian leader was in Conakry earlier this week upon the invitation of President Mamadi Doumbouya.
The visit led to the signing of a joint communiqué, which followed bilateral talks between the two delegations led by the foreign ministers of the two countries.
Banjul and Conakry have identified new opportunities for collaboration, particularly in agriculture, trade and economic cooperation, defence and security, energy, tourism, science, research and technology, youth and sports, fisheries, higher education and culture.
The Gambian petroleum and energy minister, Nani Juwara and the Managing Director of the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), Mr. Galo Saidy were also in Conakry to engage their Guinean counterparts in talks for strengthened cooperation with a view to improving the Gambia’s energy delivery.
The electricity situation in The Gambia remains challenging thanks to heavy reliance on external energy supply chains linked to the Organisation for the Development of the Gambia River (OMVG) project, which is exposed to grid vulnerabilities at regional level. As source country, Guinea is an important part of the OMVG energy distribution scheme.
During Barrow’s visit to Conkary,talks with his Guinean counterpart President Doumbouya headlined on shared development priorities.
