The Ghanaian football fraternity is in mourning following the death of 20-year-old striker Dominic Frimpong, who was fatally shot during an armed attack on his team’s bus, the Ghana Football Association announced on Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, on the road between Bibiani and Goaso, as Berekum Chelsea were returning to base after a league match.
According to initial reports, the team bus was targeted by armed individuals during a robbery, triggering panic among players and staff.
Several team members were injured in the attack. Frimpong, who sustained gunshot wounds, died despite being rushed to hospital. On loan from Aduana FC, the young forward had been playing this season for Berekum Chelsea, a top-flight club in Ghana. He had scored two goals in 13 appearances, confirming his status as a promising emerging talent.
In a statement, the Ghana Football Association expressed “deep shock and profound sadness” at his passing, paying tribute to “a promising young talent whose dedication and passion embodied the spirit of the league.”
The body also extended its condolences to the player’s family, teammates and the wider Ghanaian football community.
An investigation has been launched to identify those responsible and clarify the circumstances of the attack. The federation said it is in contact with the relevant authorities and is considering strengthening security measures for clubs involved in national competitions.
