An outbreak of hemorrhagic fever has been confirmed in Jinka town in southern Ethiopia Regional State, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health disclosed in a statement seen by APA on Thursday.
The ministry said eight suspected cases have been identified so far and it is taking immediate measures to prevent further spread of the contagious viral disease.
According to the statement, a rapid response team has been deployed to the area to determine the cause, conduct laboratory testing, and prevent further spread.
“The ministry, in collaboration with partners, is undertaking coordinated surveillance and response activities,” the statement said, adding community-level monitoring, contact tracing and house-to-house case finding have been intensified.
The type of hemorrhagic fever has not yet been confirmed, and samples are being analyzed to identify the specific virus.
The ministry emphasised the importance of early detection and prompt medical attention, noting that symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and both internal and external bleeding.
Individuals experiencing any of these symptoms are urged to seek care at the nearest health facility.
The ministry called on communities to remain vigilant, practice strict hygiene, and avoid close contact with suspected cases. Health facilities have been instructed to implement proper isolation procedures to contain the outbreak.
