Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU) has publicly accused Lebanese authorities of being responsible for the worsening health of Hannibal Gaddafi, the son of the former Libyan leader, who has been detained in Lebanon since .
The Libyan Ministry of Justice denounced the “illegal detention procedures” in Lebanese prisons, stating that these conditions “violate fundamental rights and international conventions relating to the treatment of prisoners” and have led to an alarming deterioration in the detainee’s health.
Hannibal Gaddafi has been detained in Beirut as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Shiite cleric Moussa Sadr. The prolonged detention has been a persistent source of tension, with Tripoli demanding his humanitarian release. The Libyan authorities revealed they sent an official memorandum last April proposing a “fair and humanitarian” solution but have received no response from Beirut to date. The case remains a sensitive issue, with Tripoli advocating for international mediation while Beirut insists on ongoing judicial proceedings.
