October 14, 2025, marked the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mali and Russia.
This historic cooperation has become strategic, driven by ever-closer political, military, and economic ties.
On the occasion of the commemoration of the anniversary of these relations between the two countries, Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop sent a message to his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, praising “a partnership based on trust, mutual respect, and state sovereignty.”
He recalled that “Russia has stood by Mali from the first moments of its independence,” emphasising diplomatic steadfastness “deeply rooted in the collective memory of the Malian
people.”
Since the political transition in 2020, cooperation between the two countries has strengthened considerably. On the security front, Moscow has delivered several shipments of tanks, armored vehicles, and heavy equipment to Bamako, while also deploying military instructors to train the Malian armed forces. These initiatives reflect the growing strength of a strategic partnership established by Presidents Assimi Goita and Vladimir Putin.
Russia is also present in the economic and mining sectors. The state-owned Rosatom is involved in the exploitation of lithium and gold deposits, notably in Bougoula, while joint projects are under
consideration in renewable energy. On the humanitarian front, Moscow has delivered several shipments of wheat and fertilizer to Mali, helping to support food security and national agricultural production.
“Sixty-five years of sincere friendship and fruitful cooperation allow us to look forward with confidence to the prospects that lie ahead,” Abdoulaye Diop wrote, expressing the government’s desire to “continue the diversification of cooperation in areas of common interest.”
As Mali seeks to consolidate its political and economic autonomy, Russia remains a key partner. This partnership, based on sovereignty and non-interference, illustrates the evolution of African diplomatic balances and the growing role of Moscow in the development of the continent.
