The Kingdoms of Morocco and Belgium have officially committed to upgrading their bilateral relationship to a strategic level following high-level talks in Rabat on Monday, March 2.
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévot underscored a shared vision for the future, moving beyond traditional ties toward a partnership defined by deep political dialogue and a robust, modern economic agenda.
Economic cooperation stands at the forefront of this renewed alliance, with both nations agreeing to catalyze investments in high-growth sectors. The partnership will focus specifically on the green economy, industrial innovation, and sustainable infrastructure. By leveraging Morocco’s position as the primary gateway to the African continent and Belgium’s status as a strategic European hub, the two ministers aim to create a powerful cross-continental economic bridge. This cooperation will be supported by increased exchanges between academic institutions, parliaments, and private sector stakeholders to ensure long-term sustainability.
A significant highlight of the meeting was Belgium’s reaffirmation of its “clear and unwavering” support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative regarding the Western Sahara. Minister Prévot described the plan as the “most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic basis” for a lasting political solution. Aligning with a joint declaration signed in late 2025, Belgium officially recognizes the region within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty and national unity. Prévot emphasized that Belgium intends to act on this stance across both diplomatic and economic fronts, ensuring its policies remain consistent with international law.
The two countries also pledged to strengthen their coordination within international forums, emphasizing a joint commitment to multilateralism and negotiated solutions for regional crises. By prioritizing issues such as climate change, security, and development, Rabat and Brussels are positioning their partnership as a cornerstone of stability in the Mediterranean and beyond.
