Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has firmly rejected allegations from Spanish political figures regarding migration management, warning that bilateral relations cannot thrive on unfounded accusations and unproductive rhetoric.
Speaking in New York following bilateral talks with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Bourita underscored that high-profile political attacks within Spain undermine the value of the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Reaffirming the core principles of diplomatic ties, Bourita stressed that relations continue to be guided by the April 2022 Joint Declaration established between King Mohammed VI and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. He emphasized that the framework was explicitly designed to foster dialogue, prevent unilateral actions, and build on shared priorities while resolving areas of disagreement through constructive, good-neighborly engagement.
Addressing the ongoing friction surrounding irregular migration and unaccompanied minors in Ceuta, the minister clarified Morocco’s position, asserting that Rabat unequivocally favors the return of all undocumented migrants and minors. Bourita noted that any delays or failures in completing repatriations stem from administrative and political obstacles within Spain, rather than a lack of cooperation from the Moroccan government.
