Morocco has been reappointed for a second two-year term as a member of the Codex Alimentarius Commission’s Executive Committee, representing the African region.
The reappointment was formalized on Wednesday in Rome during the 48th session of the Commission at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Morocco was represented by the National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) at the session, according to the Permanent Mission of Morocco to the UN agencies in Rome.
This reappointment is considered a significant development, not only for Morocco but for the entire African continent, particularly in the critical areas of food security and international trade. It affirms the trust and credibility Morocco has earned in the field of food safety and its consistent ability to defend African interests on the global stage.
Morocco has been an active participant in the Codex Alimentarius Commission since joining in 1968.
The Commission establishes international food standards, guidelines, and codes of practice that are crucial for contributing to food safety, quality, and fair trade. These Codex standards are widely recognized as a benchmark for international trade, particularly by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Within Africa, Morocco plays a vital role by actively working to strengthen regional coordination and promote active participation in the Commission’s work.
The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom noted that, “Thanks to its ongoing commitment and recognized expertise, the Kingdom contributes to international standardization discussions, thus consolidating its role as a regional leader and strategic partner within the Codex Alimentarius.”
Established in 1963, the Codex Executive Committee includes a president, three vice-presidents, six regional coordinators, and seven regional representatives elected based on equitable geographical distribution.
Its primary mandate is to prepare and submit proposals to the full Codex Alimentarius Commission concerning its general direction, strategic planning, and work program. It also conducts a critical review of proposals for any new work to be undertaken within the body. Morocco’s continued presence on the committee ensures Africa’s perspectives remain central to these global standard-setting discussions.
