Faced with a rapid surge in maritime traffic, the Tanger Med port is preparing for a new expansion phase designed to sustainably enhance its capacity and global standing.
The leading port in Africa and the Mediterranean, is set to launch a new extension project to anticipate the sustained growth in container traffic and import-export exchanges.
A consultation process has been initiated with national and international partners recognised for their expertise in port infrastructure, paving the way for a large-scale project of strategic importance for the kingdom.
This extension, whose exact name and scope remain to be specified, will not constitute an autonomous port but will rather extend the existing capacities of the current complex, particularly those of Tanger Med 2. The stated objective is clear: to meet the growing pressure exerted by transshipment traffic while supporting the rise in commercial flows related to the Moroccan economy.
Port authorities are favouring a progressive and controlled approach, based on targeted discussions with operators capable of supporting a capital- and technology-intensive project.
The port’s recent performance highlights the urgency of this decision. In 2024, Tanger Med crossed a new milestone by handling over ten million TEU containers, recording double-digit year-on-year growth. This momentum positions the complex among the world’s main transshipment hubs, while fueling fears of short-term saturation if no additional capacity is deployed. By 2025, the platform could reach its operational limits, within a context of international supply chain restructuring.
Two technical scenarios are currently being considered for the location of this expansion. The first would involve extending the existing site eastward, in the immediate vicinity of the current perimeter, to capitalise on the already established infrastructure. The second would focus on a more distant extension to the west, offering greater land and operational margins for a gradual ramp-up. However, no option has been finalised at this stage, with authorities prioritising a detailed analysis of logistical, environmental, and security constraints.
Designed from the outset as a port of international dimension, Tanger Med has established itself as a key platform for global maritime trade since its inauguration, thanks to its strategic position on the Strait of Gibraltar. While transshipment remains its core business, the share of import-export trade continues to increase, reinforcing its structuring role for the national economy.
The future expansion thus appears to be a decisive lever for consolidating the port’s competitiveness, maintaining its international rank, and sustainably supporting Morocco’s industrial and commercial trajectory.
