President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday announced that former Deputy President David Mabuza will be honoured with a State Funeral Category 2 on 12 July in Mpumalanga province.
In line with the State, Official and Provincial Official Funeral Policy Manual, a Category 2 funeral is reserved for deputy presidents and includes full military ceremonial honours.
Ramaphosa’s office said the South African leader had also declared a period of national mourning from Monday until the evening of 12 July.
During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all government buildings across the country.
Mabuza passed away at a hospital in Gauteng on 3 July after experiencing sudden respiratory distress.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across South Africa and the region, with leaders remembering him as a committed public servant and liberation activist.
Mabuza served as deputy president from 2018 to 2023 and was Premier of Mpumalanga from 2009 to 2018.
He was widely regarded for his role in land reform, rural development and regional diplomacy.
