The main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) issued a press release on August 9, 2026, officially declaring its stance on the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill, 2025, following a national address by President Dr. Julius Maada Bio ahead of the bill’s parliamentary consideration and vote.
The main opposition party clarified that it is not opposed to constitutional reform in its entirety, affirming its support for provisions that advance national interest, broaden political participation, and strengthen democratic institutions.
In its statement, the APC highlighted key areas of agreement within the proposed legislation, particularly endorsing the constitutional guarantee of a minimum 30 percent representation for women in political nominations. Recognizing women’s essential contribution to the country’s social, political, and economic growth, the party emphasized that their political participation must be legally protected and expanded. Furthermore, the APC expressed support for provisions expanding political inclusion for dual citizens, allowing Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora to contest parliamentary seats and hold ministerial or public appointments.
The party also endorsed maintaining distinct citizenship requirements for the offices of the President and Vice-President, stating that this balance protects executive offices while opening opportunities for dual citizens in government, parliament, and public administration. Reinforcing its overall position, the APC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting constitutional amendments that promote political inclusion, democratic integrity, and national progress.
