The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has approved US$1.83 million to advance the Lesotho-Botswana Water Transfer Project, a major initiative designed to secure long‑term water supplies in Botswana and South Africa.
The funding, released through the SADC Project Preparation and Development Facility (PPDF), will finance a full Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and a comprehensive feasibility study for the 700‑kilometre scheme, which will channel water from Lesotho’s highlands through South Africa to Botswana.
The project is expected to ease Botswana’s rising water demand while generating economic, energy and food‑security benefits for Lesotho, South Africa and the wider region.
The PPDF is part of the SADC–German cooperation framework, funded by the German government and jointly implemented by KfW and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
