A mass shooting in Austin’s primary entertainment district left two people dead and 14 others injured early Sunday morning.
The suspect, identified by authorities as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, was shot and killed by law enforcement officers less than a minute after the attack began.
The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Sixth Street, outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden. According to investigators, Diagne—a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal—initially opened fire from his vehicle before continuing the assault on foot.
The FBI has joined the investigation after discovering a Quran in the suspect’s vehicle and noting that he was wearing clothing inscribed with “Property of Allah” and symbols linked to Iran. While the Joint Terrorism Task Force has been mobilized, federal officials stressed that a specific motive has not yet been confirmed. Local authorities credited the rapid intervention of officers on the scene for preventing further loss of life.
