Three individuals were shot and wounded over the weekend as police responded to a mob in Ajepet village, Pallisa district of Uganda.
According to the district’s police report, the individuals who were members of the mob, were shot after they, along with others, had attacked a police officer and attempted disarming.
The incident occurred when Detective Constable Tasyoma Isma and a team of officers were conducting an arrest operation linked to a case of political violence and assault, the report noted.
Bukedi North Regional Police Spokesperson Wilfred Kyempasa said that during the confrontation, members of the mob cut Tasyoma on the head with a panga, leaving him seriously injured.
In the chaos, the attackers reportedly overpowered him and grabbed his firearm.
Kyempasa said another police officer identified as Ochamuna responded swiftly to rescue the officers but the mob allegedly turned on him and attempted to disarm him
“In the process of trying to disarm Ochamuna, he discharged his weapon to save himself and his colleagues. Three of the suspected attackers were shot and injured during the confrontation and were rushed to Pallisa Hospital for treatment under police guard,” Kyempasa told local media.
Authorities later recovered DC Tasyoma’s gun, which had been taken by the attackers, after it was retrieved by the Gombolola Internal Security Officer (GISO) of Gogonyo Sub-county and handed back to police.
The police confirmed that DC Tasyoma was rushed to Ebenezer Medical Center in Pallisa Town Council for treatment, where he was still receiving medical attention.
