The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) said that its jet carried out an airstrike in Somalia’s Pontland state, targeting fighters from the Islamic State (ISIS), according to a statement seen by APA on Tuesday.
The command said that the strike took place on April 17 in a mountainous area located approximately 30 miles southeast of the port city of Bosaso, in the Bari region.
The operation comes as U.S. air operations in Somalia continue to intensify especially against al-Shabaab insurgents.
Earlier this month, the command said the US conducted nearly 50 airstrikes against the group during the first three months of 2026.
In line with a policy adopted last year regarding the disclosure of operational detail, the command did not provide specific causality figures or damage assessments.
The United States maintains a consistent presence in Somali airspace, conducting strikes against both ISIS and al-Shabaab militants to support the Somali federal government and the federal states in their counter-terrorism campaign.
This latest strike in the north coincides with ongoing U.S. aerial support in southern Somalia, where intense ground fighting has escalated in recent weeks between federal forces and al-Shabaab fighters.
US forces have long maintained a presence in Somalia, providing training, advice, and intelligence support to local forces battling extremist groups.
