The United States Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert warning American citizens that demonstrations could occur at any time across Kenya ahead of the 25 June anniversary of anti‑government protests held two years ago.
The advisory, issued on Thursday, said demonstrations could occur at any time, though the likelihood is expected to rise as 25 June approaches.
The embassy warned that any demonstrations could cause major traffic disruption, including congestion and roadblocks set up by protesters or law‑enforcement agencies.
“June 25 is the anniversary of protests that occurred in Kenya during the past two years. Demonstrations may occur at any time but the potential for protests is higher around June 25,” the advisory note stated.
American citizens in Kenya were urged to exercise heightened vigilance and avoid areas where demonstrations or large crowds may gather.
US nationals were advised to follow local news closely and stay alert to any changes in the security environment that might impact their safety or travel.
The alert was issued as expectations grow over potential protests marking last year’s anti‑finance bill demonstrations, which sparked nationwide unrest and mass mobilisation against proposed tax hikes and governance issues.
Authorities have not announced any limits on public gatherings although security agencies say they are monitoring the situation closely ahead of the anniversary.
