At the opening of the 2025 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group, outgoing President Akinwumi Adesina delivered a heartfelt reflection on his ten-year tenure, describing it as a mission he embraced with unwavering intensity.
Speaking at a press breakfast in Abidjan last Monday, held on the sidelines of the Meetings running from 26 to 30 May, Mr Adesina underlined the profound personal commitment required by the role. “This is not a job. If anyone is looking for a job, they shouldn’t apply. This is not a job. It is a mission,” he declared.
Recalling the personal sacrifices made over the past decade, he shared: “As my wife Grace and my team will tell you, for ten years, I had no life. Absolutely none. I worked every single day. Without respite.”
Mr Adesina said he was deeply honoured to have served as President of the AfDB Group. “It has been the greatest honour of my life,” he stated, describing a period defined by “unshakable determination, unwavering passion and steadfast dedication.”
The event marked the official launch of the Bank’s flagship annual gathering, expected to welcome up to 6,000 participants from 91 countries, including policymakers, private sector stakeholders, academics and civil society representatives. “It is one of the moments I cherish most each year — a time to speak candidly, reflect deeply, and offer my sincere thanks,” he told journalists.
Highlighting landmark achievements under his leadership, Adesina cited a historic capital increase from $93 billion to $318 billion, a record $8.9 billion replenishment of the African Development Fund, and development projects that have impacted more than 565 million people across the continent.
Launched in 2015, the “High 5” agenda — Light up and power Africa; Feed Africa; Industrialise Africa; Integrate Africa; and Improve the quality of life for the people of Africa — was positioned as the foundation of the Bank’s transformative work. “The High 5s have changed the lives of over 565 million Africans. These are not just numbers. They are futures fulfilled. They represent hope realised,” he said.
Addressing the media, Adesina offered his gratitude: “Your role has never been more vital. You are not just observers. You amplify Africa’s voice. You shape the narrative. You hold us accountable. You inform the world.”
He reiterated his call for African-led media platforms: “The African Development Bank you know today is no longer the Bank you once knew. It is now a globally recognised institution.”
On the eve of handing over to his successor Adesina noted: “Leadership may change, but the mission remains the same. The Bank’s direction is clear, its resolve is strong, and its commitment to Africa’s development is unwavering.”
Asked about the challenges awaiting the next president, he offered this advice: “The task will be to build on the past, look to the future, and find the courage within to stand for Africa’s interests.”
