African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on Monday paid tribute to the contribution of people of African descent to the development, culture and progress of societies around the world, calling for stronger ties between Africa and its diaspora.
In a message marking the International Day for People of African Descent, the AU Commission Chairperson extended his greetings to the hundreds of millions of people of African descent living across the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
He stressed that the day serves as a reminder of the historical and cultural ties linking Africa with its diasporas, which he described as belonging to “one family” despite geographical distances and generational divides.
As the second International Decade for People of African Descent, covering the period 2025–2034 and centred on recognition, justice and development, continues, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to advancing these objectives.
The pan-African organisation intends in particular to pursue its efforts to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and all forms of related intolerance.
The AUC chairperson also recalled that the African Union regards its diaspora as an integral part of the African family and an essential partner in implementing Agenda 2063.
This commitment is reflected, among other initiatives, in the African Union Decade of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations, covering the period 2026–2035.
The AU is also working to develop a Common African Position on Reparations, while strengthening its partnerships with the Caribbean, Latin America and African communities established around the world.
In his message, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf stressed that Africa’s history and that of its diaspora are inseparable, arguing that their futures should likewise remain intertwined.
“Africa’s history and that of its diaspora are inseparable. Their future must be as well,” he said.
The AU Commission Chairperson concluded by extending wishes for peace, dignity, justice and prosperity to all people of African descent, reaffirming the organisation’s determination to work with them towards building a “stronger, more supportive and more united” global African community.
