The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a significant increase in the financial allocations for the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024, set to take place from July 5 to 26, 2025.
The winner’s prize money has been doubled to $1 million (approximately 650 million CFA francs), while the overall prize budget has increased by 45 percent to $3.475 million (approximately 2.258 billion CFA francs).
CAF President Patrice Motsepe affirmed the organization’s ongoing commitment: “CAF continues its commitment to the development and advancement of women’s football in Africa. The 100 percent increase in the winning team’s bonus (…) as well as the 45 percent increase in all rewards should help improve the salaries of players, coaches, and technical staff.”
The 15th edition of the tournament will feature twelve participating teams. Host nation Morocco will kick off the competition at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, with matches also taking place in various stadiums across different Moroccan cities. Nigeria, with an impressive eleven titles, remains the historical favorite.
Defending champions South Africa, who secured their first title in 2022 by defeating Morocco in the final, represent a turning point for African women’s football, showcasing the emergence of new formidable nations.
CAF emphasized that “the level of performance in African women’s football continues to improve and is now reaching international standards. We are delighted with the significant growth in the number of supporters, viewers and partners around this 2024 edition. This competition promises to be a great success.”
