Guinea has been welcome back into the fold of the African Union almost five years after being suspended following a military coup.
The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has confirmed the reinstatement of Guinea as a member of the organsation.
“The council decides to lift the suspension of the participation of the Republic of Guinea in the activities of the AU, in line with Article 26 of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance,” the council said in a communiqué adopted over the weekend.
Guinea’s membership was suspended following the coup which toppled civilian president Alpha Conde in September 2021.
The West African nation’s reinstatement came after the AU’s peace and security council, in its 1,325th meeting, reviewed the country’s political transition and processes which were found “very successful”.
Accordingly, the council invited Guinea to immediately resume its participation in the AU’s activities.
The council said it has welcomed the positive steps taken in the implementation of the Political Transition Roadmap in Guinea which culminated in the successful organisation of presidential election on 28 December 2025.
It also commended the Guinean people for their strong commitment to the promotion of democracy and the rule of law, through peaceful and orderly conduct of the election which former junta leader Mamady Doumbouya won by a landslide.
The council also urged AU member states, ECOWAS and the United Nations, as well as other international partners to continue their support towards stabilisation and sustainable development in Guinea.
