The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has issued a statement on Thursday vehemently condemning Israel for appointing Michael Lotem as ambassador to breakaway Somaliland.
OIC said the move constitutes a violation of the sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity of federal Somalia which still claims the self-styled Republic of Somaliland which declared its independence in 1991.
”The General Secretariat reaffirmed its full solidarity with the Republic of Somalia, its unwavering support for its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and its absolute support for its legitimate institutions” the statement said.
The OIC urged Tel Aviv to abide by the principles and Charter of the United Nations and international law, all of which stipulate respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states including Somalia.
Israel on Wednesday anounced career diplomat Lotem as its first ambassador to Somaliland five months after recognising the territory as an independent country, ending 30 years of international isolation.
Lotem was Israel’s ambassador to Kenya.
The authorities in Mogadishu have released a statement condemning Israel’s appointment of a fully accredited diplomat in Somaliland as a breach of Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Somaliland, an enclave of just over 6 million people located on the Gulf of Aden was officially recognised by Israel last December, triggering international condemnation from the United Nations, African Union, the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
However, officials from Tel Aviv and Hargeisa have exchanged visits since Israel’s controversial decision to recognise the strategically located territory.
