Morocco has emerged as one of the most reliable grain importers on the continent, successfully fulfilling all its U.S. wheat contracts for the 2025 season without a single delay or cancellation.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Kingdom received its full contracted volume of 61,700 tonnes between June and mid-December. This achievement distinguishes Morocco in a regional landscape where logistical bottlenecks, port congestion, and financing hurdles frequently disrupt the steady flow of essential food supplies.
Agricultural analysts currently rank Morocco third in Africa for contract reliability and delivery efficiency regarding U.S. grain. This high performance is attributed to rigorous logistics management and effective monitoring of maritime freight flows. While many other African markets struggled with supply chain volatility in 2025, Morocco’s ability to finalize deliveries on schedule reflects a stable and well-organized import infrastructure that minimizes the risks associated with global grain trading.
The broader African market has seen a dramatic surge in demand for American wheat during the 2025/26 season. USDA data indicates that total exports to the continent have climbed to 1.71 million tonnes, a massive increase from the roughly 450,000 tonnes recorded during the previous cycle. Nigeria continues to lead the continent as the primary importer of U.S. wheat, followed by South Africa, while demand is also trending upward in nations such as Egypt, Algeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.
To protect national food security against global price fluctuations, Morocco is actively diversifying its supply origins. In addition to its U.S. imports, the Kingdom plans to secure approximately 3.5 million tonnes of French soft wheat for the remainder of the 2025/26 marketing year. By balancing its requirements between North American and European suppliers, Moroccan authorities aim to create a resilient risk-management framework that ensures a consistent supply of bread and flour for the domestic market regardless of geopolitical or logistical shifts.
