The Liberian government has formalised the signing of a major agreement with Tanger Med Engineering, to comprehensively modernise ports in the capital Monrovia and Buchanan.
Tanger Med Engineering is a technical subsidiary of the Moroccan port group Tanger Med.
This partnership is part of the Liberian government’s “ARREST” agenda, led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, and aims to stimulate economic growth by rehabilitating critical infrastructure, facilitating regional trade, and modernising the country’s logistics services.
The adopted master plan includes the renovation of container terminals, the rehabilitation of freight docks, improving warehouses, the integration of digital logistics solutions, upgrading security measures, and adopting sustainable energy technologies.
Dredging and expansion operations are also planned to increase the capacity of the two ports.
“This project marks a turning point in the history of our port economy. It paves the way for new attractiveness for investment and better integration into regional supply chains,” said Sekou Hussein
Dukuly, Director General of the National Ports Authority of Liberia (NPA), during the signing ceremony.
The agreement strengthens bilateral cooperation initiated in November 2024 with the Ports Operating Company – Marsa Maroc. This initial agreement laid the groundwork for a public-private partnership for the creation of a multipurpose terminal in Monrovia and the rehabilitation of the Port of Buchanan.
The signing of this new partnership was welcomed by several Liberian officials, including members of Parliament, representatives of sectoral commissions, and Liberian diplomats accredited to Morocco,
who played an active role in bringing the project to fruition.
The entire program aims to reposition Liberia as a competitive logistics hub on the West African maritime corridor, while strengthening its capacity to serve as a transit corridor for landlocked neighbouring countries such as Mali and Guinea.
