The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) won Morocco’s parliamentary elections held on Wednesday, September 23, securing 97 seats in the House of Representatives, according to provisional results announced by interior minister Abdelouafi Laftit.
The National Rally of Independents (RNI), which led the outgoing governing coalition, came second with 66 seats, followed by the Istiqlal Party (PI) with 65 seats, the Justice and Development Party (PJD) with 54 seats, the Popular Movement (MP) with 29 seats, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) with 26 seats, the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) with 19 seats, and the Constitutional Union (UC) with 17 seats.
The Democratic and Social Movement (MDS) won eight seats, as did the Alliance of the Left (AG). The Front of Democratic Forces (FFD) and the Equity Party (PE) each secured two seats, while the Neo-Democrats Party (PND) and the Party of Unity and Democracy (PUD) each won one seat, the minister said while presenting the provisional election results.
Laftit said nationwide voter turnout reached 38.08%, compared with 50.35% in the 2021 parliamentary elections.
Nearly 16 million registered voters were eligible to cast ballots to elect the 395 members of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the Moroccan parliament.
The minister added that 3,006 election observers monitored the vote, including 730 from the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) and around 200 international observers.
Under Morocco’s constitutional framework, the king appoints the head of government from the political party that wins the largest number of seats in the House of Representatives. The appointee is then tasked with forming a government for a five-year term.
The PAM, the RNI and the Istiqlal Party formed the outgoing governing coalition.
