The Nigerian national team on Thursday confirmed the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufia at the age of 61.
Rufai won the African Cup of Nations with Nigeria in 1994 and represented the country in two World Cups. He also played in three AfCON tournaments beginning in 1984 when he secured a runners-up medal.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed Rufai’s death after a long illness.
The NFF in its X (formerly Twitter) handle described him as a legend of the game especially in Nigeria where he is considered one of the best shot stoppers in the history of the Super Eagles.
”Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai” the NFF tribute added.
Rufai plied his trade in Europe including in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain and played in the FIFA World Cups of 1994 and 1998.
