Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina on Monday appointed army general Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo as the country’s new prime minister, a week after dissolving his government in response to intensifying anti-government protests over chronic power and water shortages.
Zafisambo replaces Christian Ntsay who was dismissed alongside the entire cabinet in what Rajoelina described as a necessary reset to restore public trust.
“He must be capable of restoring order and regaining the people’s trust,” Rajoelina said during the announcement at the presidential palace in Antananarivo.
Zafisambo previously served as director of the military Cabinet in the prime minister’s office and now assumes leadership amid mounting pressure from youth-led movements that have gained traction online.
The appointment of a military figure to lead the government comes as demonstrations – largely driven by Gen-Z activists mobilised through social media – enter their third week.
Protesters have repeatedly called for Rajoelina’s resignation, citing deteriorating living conditions and lack of basic services.
The protests reflect growing frustration among Madagascar’s younger population who have used digital platforms to organise rallies and amplify demands for accountability.
