The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has begun nationwide public consultations on the delimitation of constituencies and the introduction of a proportional representation electoral system, key reforms mandated under the 2025 constitutional amendment ahead of the August 2026 general elections.
ECZ chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis, speaking on Zambian National Broadcasting Corporation’s Sunday Interview, said consultations are underway in all 116 districts to gather public submissions before final decisions are made.
The delimitation exercise will lead to the creation of 70 new constituencies, a major restructuring of Zambia’s electoral map.
Zaloumis said the process will consider population size, geography, historical representation and equity.
She dismissed concerns that boundary changes could be manipulated for partisan advantage, saying her commission is committed to a fair and transparent process.
The reforms stem from the 2025 constitutional amendment, which introduced proportional representation to broaden political inclusion and adjust constituency boundaries to reflect demographic shifts.
The amendment aims to strengthen representation, reduce disparities between urban and rural constituencies and modernise Zambia’s electoral framework.
