Zimbabwean police are set to deploy drones in Harare’s central business district (CBD) to track and penalise traffic offenders as authorities ramp up efforts to restore order amid worsening congestion.
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi told the state-run Herald that the drones, part of the newly introduced Electronic Traffic Management System (ETMS), would complement surveillance cameras already in use to monitor errant drivers.
He said the drones would strengthen the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)’s ability to detect violations up to a radius of 20 kilometres from the CBD and improve compliance with traffic laws.
Authorities have also rolled out CCTV monitoring systems in Bulawayo, with plans to expand the initiative to other cities across Zimbabwe.
This comes as Harare grapples with chaotic road conditions caused by an influx of illegal taxis and kombis, which frequently violate traffic regulations.
Common infractions include stopping at unauthorised locations, creating unofficial lanes, driving against the flow of traffic and disregarding road signs.
ZRP recently flagged 290 motorists for various violations captured by surveillance cameras, with many now facing fines.
