Former South African President Jacob Zuma will contest his expulsion from the African National Congress (ANC) on Friday in a move seen as provocative given his establishment of a rival political party.
The hearing will be conducted virtually by the ANC’s national disciplinary committee of appeals (NDCA) despite Zuma’s request for a physical meeting.
The Jacob Zuma Foundation announced on Thursday that Zuma’s representative, Tony Yengeni, will argue for a public appeal process and address preliminary objections before the main appeal is heard.
Zuma was expelled from the ANC in July following charges of bringing the party into disrepute and collaborating with a political organisation outside of its alliances.
Specifically, he faced accusations of campaigning for the uMkhonto weSizwe party, which contributed to the ANC’s electoral setbacks in May.
Despite his recent political manoeuvres, including the formation of his own party, Zuma insists he remains an ANC member.
The NDCA’s decision to expel him was supported by several committee members who noted that his past contributions to the liberation struggle do not excuse his alleged misconduct.
