At least 36 people were killed after a wooden scaffolding collapsed in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region, APA can report on Thursday.
The makeshift structure, set up for the construction of a church in the town of Arerti, collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday morning, killing more than 36 worshipers and injuring more than 200 others.
The accident occurred around 7:45 a.m. local during an annual church celebration in the town of Arerti, North Shewa Zone, when the makeshift structure used for finishing work on a church caved in.
Police said the death toll could rise further as more than 200 people sustained serious and minor injuries.
The injured are receiving medical treatment at nearby health facilities.
The collapse caused significant damage, trapping many worshippers beneath the debris and complicating rescue efforts, it was noted.
As of late Wednesday, emergency operations were continuing to free those still trapped.
