Mahamba border post, a key transit point between Eswatini and South Africa, has been temporarily closed due to technical challenges on the South African side, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced late Monday.
Ministry spokesperson Mlandvo Dlamini advised travelers to use alternative border posts, including Gege, Sicunusa, Nsalutje and Lavumisa, until the issue is resolved.
“In light of this closure, travellers are advised to use alternative border posts,” Dlamini said.
The closure is expected to disrupt movement, particularly for commuters and businesses relying on the route for imports and exports.
Mahamba, one of the oldest and busiest border crossings, serves as a major gateway for travellers and trade between the two countries.
It is a vital link for trade and tourism, facilitating economic exchanges between Eswatini and South Africa.
The border post was also closed in late May due to a water crisis on the South African side that disrupted operations at the port of entry, affecting cross-border trade, public health, and the movement of goods and people.
The issue stemmed from a mechanical failure of the generator responsible for pumping water to the area.
Authorities are yet to provide a timeline for reopening.
