Dar es Salaam is once again hosting the embassy of Hungary 34 years after it was shut down, a senior Hungarian diplomat announced.
Foreign minister Péter Szijjártó said while officially opening the embassy in Tanzania’s biggest city on Monday that the move marks a new beginning of strengthening bilateral cooperation with the African country seen as one of its most illustrious nations.
He said returning an embassy to Tanzania was a way of correcting what he called a past mistake, by closing Hungary’s previous representation in Dar es Salaam in 1991.
He also spoke about taking advantage of the economic opportunities which diplomatic collaboration between Dar es Salaam and Budapest provide.
According to him, the new embassy will process his country’s scholarship program for Tanzanian students.
Currently at least 100 Tanzanian students are enrolled in Hungarian universities, which Szijjártó promised will be strengthened as the two countries set more ambitious goals.
