The Senegalese government has issued a formal call urging Guinea-Bissau’s transitional authorities to initiate an inclusive dialogue with national political and social leaders amidst growing technical, legal, and institutional challenges that threaten the upcoming December 6, 2026 general elections.
In an official statement released Thursday, Dakar expressed concern that mounting administrative hurdles could compromise the established electoral calendar and jeopardize the broader democratic transition.
Highlighting the need for transparent and consensual governance, Senegal stressed that any proposed adjustments to the election timeline must involve open consultations and firm safeguards to ensure a rapid return to constitutional order. Dakar specifically called for the immediate lifting of restrictions on civil and political activities to restore stakeholder trust and guarantee peaceful election preparations. Serving as the current rotating presidency of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and leading regional mediation efforts, Senegal urged all Guinea-Bissau political actors and military figures to exercise restraint while reaffirming its commitment to facilitating a sovereign, durable political settlement for lasting institutional stability.
