Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, in Moscow on Thursday called for a reinforced partnership between Africa and Russia.
He said it should be one founded on peace, security, economic development, and a more prominent role for the continent within international bodies.
Speaking at the 3rd Russia-Africa Summit, the Congolese head of state advocated for a diversification of international partnerships, which would allow his country to preserve its sovereignty and freedom of decision-making.
“For us, diversifying our partnerships does not mean choosing a side; it means strengthening our freedom to make decisions for the benefit of our people,” he stated.
Addressing the conflicts in the eastern DRC, Felix Tshisekedi denounced the illegal exploitation of natural resources, which he argued helps fuel armed violence. He reaffirmed Kinshasa’s determination to achieve lasting peace, protect the population, and restore state authority across the entire national territory.
In this context, the Congolese president requested Moscow’s support for the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions 2773 and 2808, as well as for mediation efforts underway through the Washington and Doha processes.
Beyond security concerns, the Congolese leader identified several priority areas for cooperation, including job creation, energy, infrastructure, the local processing of minerals, and food security.
He also emphasised the need to reform the UN Security Council to ensure a fairer representation of Africa in global governance.
As a non-permanent member of this body for the 2026-2027 term, the DRC intends to advocate for an independent approach that prioritises dialogue and the peaceful resolution of disputes – most notably in Ukraine and the Middle East.
For President Tshisekedi, the summit’s success should be measured against three key objectives: strengthening security, increasing production capacity, and giving greater weight to the African voice on the international stage
