The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa over the weekend issued a brief alert, warning that conflict could reach the Ethiopian capital.
There have been recurring incidents of mass passenger kidnappings and killings – particularly in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Incidents of ransom kidnapping have also been reported in the Amhara and Tigray regions.
However, the prediction the U.S. embassy is making appears to be different from one that the country has witnessed.
It is presumed that the U.S. embassy might have intelligence information reaching possible unrest.
“The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens to always pay attention to personal safety and security for yourself and your family” said the statement.
It said crime can occur anywhere and at any time and that vigilance is key to reducing vulnerability.
”Avoid demonstrations, rallies, and other large gatherings”, the US embassy warned.
These types of gatherings may result in increased traffic congestion, police presence and police checkpoints throughout the city, and violence, it said.
Active and large scale military conflict has been underway in the Amhara region of Ethiopia for nearly two years.
Also, there is an ongoing conflict in the Oromia region of Ethiopia where there has been a notable security crisis.
He said the AU is requesting only $190 million for 2025, far less than the estimated $7 billion that maritime piracy once cost the world annually.
Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defense Soipan Tuya argued that the funding challenges may be attributed to donor fatigue, noting the urgent need for predictable funding.
Tuya said Somalia’s stability is integral to regional and global security, urging the international community to act in unity.
