Guatemala has officially declared its full support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, calling it the “only serious, credible, and realistic basis” for resolving the decades-old territorial dispute.
This endorsement further strengthens Morocco’s diplomatic efforts to build international backing for its stance on the conflict.
Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado made these remarks to reporters on Thursday following a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in Rabat. Alvarado emphasized that any resolution must fully respect the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Morocco. He also affirmed Guatemala’s full support for Morocco’s efforts to achieve a political solution acceptable to all involved parties. During their discussions, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to the fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Guatemala has emerged as one of Morocco’s staunchest allies in Latin America regarding the Sahara conflict. In a historic move in December 2022, Guatemala became the first Latin American country to open a consulate general in Dakhla, a city within the disputed territory. Just last month, a Guatemalan diplomat at the United Nations also described Morocco’s autonomy plan as “a realistic and credible basis” for any future agreement.
Morocco’s autonomy plan proposes granting the Sahara territory autonomy while remaining under Moroccan sovereignty. This initiative has garnered increasing international support from several key countries, including the United States, which recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in 2020.
