Burkina Faso has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and welcomed the adoption by the Security Council of Resolution 2797, which endorses the autonomy plan, the country’s Foreign Ministry indicated on Tuesday.
The resolution enshrines the autonomy plan, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, as a “serious, credible, and lasting” basis for achieving a solution to the Western Sahara issue.
This position was expressed by the head of Burkinabe diplomacy, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, during a meeting in Rabat with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.
According to the Burkinabe Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré described the autonomy plan for the Western Sahara as the only credible and realistic way to resolve the regional dispute.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Conference on Victims of Terrorism in Africa, organised on December 2 and 3 in the Moroccan capital.
The Burkinabe minister recalled his country’s opening of a Consulate General in Dakhla on October 23, 2020, emphasising that this diplomatic representation illustrates Burkina Faso’s commitment alongside Morocco.
The Burkinabe presence in the region, he added, reflects a desire to strengthen bilateral ties and support the development efforts undertaken in the Southern Provinces.
Nasser Bourita expressed the kingdom’s gratitude for Burkina Faso’s “constant and unwavering” position, considering that this support helps to “clarify” African dynamics surrounding the Western Sahara issue. The Moroccan minister also praised the solidity of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the security, diplomatic, and economic fields.
Finally, the two officials discussed the need to continue bilateral coordination on regional issues, in a context marked by the rise of terrorist threats in the Sahel and African efforts aimed at strengthening stability and continental integration.
