President Kais Saied on Wednesday vowed that Tunisia “will not be easy prey for anyone who dares, by any means whatsoever, to target it from within or without”.
This is according to a statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic following a meeting held at the Carthage Palace with head of government, Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri.
This statement comes as the Tunisian authorities step up messages focusing on national sovereignty and internal stability, against a backdrop of persistent economic tensions and close monitoring of the social situation in several regions of the country.
The Tunisian presidency stated that the meeting also addressed the outcomes of Tunisia’s participation in the Africa-France Summit held on 11 and 12 May in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Tunisian leader indicated that he was monitoring “closely and continuously” developments in the general situation across Tunisia’s various regions.
The presidential statement emphasised that Kais Saied had stressed the need to take decisions aimed at “putting an end to the injustice and precariousness long endured” by populations facing
poverty and unemployment.
This statement is in line with a political stance that the Tunisian president has consistently upheld over the past several months, centred on the protection of national institutions, the rejection of
external pressure, and the prioritisation of social issues.
At the same time, the Tunisian authorities are seeking to strengthen their diplomatic presence on African issues, notably through their participation in continental meetings focused on investment, economic partnerships and development challenges.
However, the Tunisian presidency did not announce any new economic or social measures following this meeting. The official statement merely reiterated the head of state’s focus on the living conditions of the population and on maintaining the country’s internal stability.
