The Liberian Ministry of Education has officially unveiled the National Accelerated Adult Literacy Program (NAALP), introducing a standardized framework designed to bridge educational gaps for non-formal adult learners nationwide.
The strategic initiative incorporates functional numeracy, financial literacy, healthcare awareness, and civil education into an expedited curriculum aimed at fostering economic independence and active civic involvement among adult populations.
Targeting an increase in the national adult literacy rate from 58.6 percent to at least 62.8 percent by 2029, the program’s initial operational phase will target six focus regions: Grand Cape Mount, Bong, Grand Bassa, Gbarpolu, Lofa, and Rivercess Counties. Implementation relies on a broad multi-stakeholder coalition, incorporating grassroots civil society groups, religious bodies, market associations, and international development partners to drive community mobilization and enrollment ahead of Liberia’s designated 2027 National Year of Literacy.
